During her extensive career within this area of law, Yesim has represented forensic and non-forensic patients who are detained within all levels of in-patient security. She also has experience in representing child and adolescent patients in complex cases.
In addition to representing detained patients, Yesim routinely represents patients in the community who are either subject to a Conditional Discharge, or a Community Treatment Order. She appreciates that although no longer detained, these orders are a form of deprivation of liberty, and it is important that a patient has a right to appeal against them if they wish to do so.
Area of Specialism
Yesim went on to qualify as a solicitor in March 2011, and obtained her Mental Health Tribunal Panel Accreditation in July 2011. This is a recognised quality standard for practitioners representing patients in proceedings under the Mental Health Act.
In 2017 Yesim became the supervising solicitor of a Mental Health law department in London. During this time, she trained non-qualified members of the team who would go on to provide a high standard of representation for clients.
Motivation
Yesim joined TV Edwards as a mental health law solicitor in August 2021. Upon leaving law school in 2007, she obtained the position of a paralegal in the mental health department of a national law firm. She quickly realised she had a passion for representing patients detained under the Mental Health Act, and she has strong communication and advocacy skills.
Notable Cases
Whilst representing patients within this area, Yesim has successfully appealed against First-tier Tribunal decisions on the basis that the Tribunal’s written reasons for their decision did not adequately address the statutory criteria as required under the Mental Health Act.
She has also assisted in the repatriation of detained patients back to their country of origin, and successfully submitted complaints to the Parliamentary Ombudsman regarding the use of IM treatment, which resulted in compensation for the client.
