Alpa Ghelani represented a child through their Guardian in care proceedings spanning from November 2022 to September 2024. The case arose from serious concerns about the father, who was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, on the Sex Offenders Register, and barred from working with children, yet maintained contact with the mother’s older children and later had a baby with her.
With the Guardian’s support, Alpa secured permission to obtain phone records, evidencing ongoing contact between the parents despite the mother’s initial denials. Specialist risk, psychological, and parenting assessments were conducted for both parents.
Throughout the case, Alpa repeatedly challenged the local authority’s handling, including its failure to fully grasp the risks posed by the father and proposals that would have placed the mother back at her previous address or transferred oversight to another local authority. At several junctures, Alpa and the Guardian drove the case in a safer direction for the children. The proceedings concluded with a Supervision Order, a Prohibited Steps Order, a Child Arrangements Order to the mother, and a Parental Responsibility Order limiting the father’s ability to exercise his PR. A no-contact order was also made. Alpa undertook most advocacy, with counsel instructed during the final stages.
