The Role

We are seeking a dynamic, Head of Family Finance to lead a high-performing team within our family law department. This role requires a strategic leader who will drive the team’s performance, attract new business, and ensure a culture aligned with the firm’s values of excellence, collaboration, integrity, accessibility and respect. You will be instrumental in shaping the team’s continued success, ensuring financial targets are met while maintaining our commitment to a positive, supportive working culture. 

About the Family Team

There are 6 team members in the Family Finance team, 3 Associates, 2 Solicitors and 1 Trainee Solicitor.

Based at our office in Whitechapel but occasionally also working out of our office in Clapham Junction.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • Inspire and lead the team, fostering a collaborative and high-energy environment.
  • Contribute to the team’s strategic objectives and actively participate in recruitment.
  • Ensure the team maintains a high level of legal expertise through continuous learning and development.
  • Provide legal guidance and supervision on complex family finance cases.
  • Ensure that all matters are handled in compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards.
  • Collaborate with other departments within the firm to ensure seamless service delivery to clients.
  • Step into leadership with tact and grace, ensuring a smooth leadership transition within an existing, well-established team. 

Internal and External Reputation:

  • Known for strong technical expertise and experience in all family finance and children law matters.
  • Maintain and enhance your reputation as a leading Family Finance lawyer, both within the team and the broader legal community positioning yourself as a visible leader in family law.
  • Generously share your technical knowledge, skills, and expertise, supporting the development and ongoing training of team members.

Business Development & Marketing:

  • Lead the marketing of both yourself and the team, actively seeking opportunities for visibility and new business.
  • Build and nurture strong professional relationships with colleagues in the family law network and beyond.
  • Use your network to generate referrals, creating opportunities for yourself and your team.
  • Develop and implement business development strategies to bring in new, high-quality work for the department, contributing to the team’s financial success and reputation.
  • Represent the firm at events, conferences, and seminars to raise the profile of the Family Finance team and the firm.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to create targeted campaigns, enhance brand visibility, and showcase the department’s expertise through thought leadership (articles, seminars, etc.)

Department Strategy & Financial Management:

  • Play an integral role in enhancing the team’s financial performance by driving profitability and encouraging a consistent flow of quality work.
  • Ensure the team meets its targets without compromising the firm’s commitment to a positive and sustainable work culture.
  • Oversee the budgeting process for the family finance team in collaboration with the Head of Department. 
  • Develop and execute strategies to drive revenue growth and ensure profitability within the Family Finance team.
  • Monitor the financial performance of the department and report to the overall Head of Department Sarah Inchley and the firm’s management committee on key performance metrics.

Operational Leadership & Strategic Decision-Making:

  • Take responsibility for leading the Family Finance sub-team with autonomy, overseeing daily operations and making key operational decisions.
  • Collaborate closely with fellow leaders, Alia Lewis and Sarah Inchley, to contribute to the overall dynamic leadership of the wider family law department.
  • Report directly to overall Head of Department Sarah Inchley and the firm’s management committee on financial performance, driving the team’s success in alignment with firm-wide goals.

Skills / Knowledge Requirements

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in family finance law, with experience in leading and managing a team.
  • In-depth knowledge of family law and strong technical abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build and maintain lasting client relationships.
  • Financial Acumen: Strong understanding of budgeting, financial forecasting, and performance management.
  • Strong external reputation in family law, ideally with recognition in directories.
  • A track record of business development and marketing to generate work for themselves and the wider team. Experience in developing and executing successful business development strategies.
  • Leadership experience, with a focus on team development, financial performance, and operational management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the partners to drive the department’s strategic vision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, Exceptional communication and active listening abilities to ensure staff are heard, supported, and developed.
  • A leader who fosters a collaborative and inclusive culture, encouraging feedback and ensuring team members feel valued.
  • Ideally, you will bring connections to East End client bases, helping the firm expand its reach.
